The procedure for filling nil returns is not so complicated. All you need is an active internet connection and a smartphone, desktop or a laptop. The procedure will only take a maximum of 2 minutes if the steps below are followed.

- Login to KRA website.
The first step to KRA nil returns filling is logging in to your Itax account. Here is the KRA website to file nill returns – Itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/. Enter your KRA PIN and click continue button below.
Next, enter your password and answer your security question if any. Don’t forget to answer the security stamp mathematics question. If you can’t remember your password, you can reset it through your email by following the prompts after clicking forgot password.
Don’t know where to find your pin? Check on the top left corner of your KRA PIN certificate. The number will be just below “Personal Identification Number.” It contains both letters and numbers, and it is usually 11 characters long.
- Place your cursor on the “Returns” option in the Menu.
After login in you will be automatically redirected to KRA homepage. Place your cursor or click on the returns option in the menu so that the options under the category might appear in the form of a drop-down menu.
- Click on the “File nil returns” option.
After clicking on the option, you will be redirected to a new page where you will now have to file your nil returns.
- Filing KRA nil returns
The type and Taxpayer PIN options will be already filled for you. For the Tax obligation option select “Income tax – Resident” and click on the next button.

Here enter your wife’s pin and the period for which you are filling nil returns. The PIN and return period fields are mostly filled automatically for you. If they are not filled automatically, please fill them manually.
- Click on the “Submit” button.
After clicking a message similar to this will appear.
”Dear Taxpayer filing of NIL returns is only applicable in cases where you have NO transactions to declare for the period, Are you sure you want to file Nil Return?”
Click okay to file your KRA nil returns online automatically.
- Download your Returns Receipt
Many people ignore this last step as they consider it to be less critical. Please make sure you download and print your returns receipt in case anything happens, or anyone asks for it. This serves as evidence that you file your returns each year.
